Burden’s Landing turn collapse into catharsis on ‘Blank Page’

Washington, DC band Burden’s Landing return with “Blank Page”, a track that doesn’t just confront emotional weight so much as actively wrestles it into something louder, heavier, and ultimately more survivable. It’s a song built on pressure rather than polish, leaning into distortion, urgency, and sheer physical momentum as a way of making sense of internal collapse.

From the opening bars, “Blank Page” wastes no time establishing its intent. Guitars arrive already fractured at the edges, drums push forward with a sense of refusal rather than precision, and the whole arrangement feels like it’s been captured in the middle of motion rather than carefully constructed in isolation. That immediacy is central to the band’s identity, and here it becomes the song’s defining feature: nothing feels separated from the emotion that created it.

Lyrically and conceptually, the track sits in the space between self-doubt and survival. Written during a period of depression and creative stagnation, it frames songwriting itself as a kind of intervention, a way of interrupting spiralling thoughts before they take hold completely. The idea of a “blank page” becomes less about emptiness and more about possibility: the moment before direction is chosen, when something can still change course.

What makes the song effective is the lack of distance between feeling and execution. Rather than refining that experience into something detached or reflective, Burden’s Landing allow it to remain raw and immediate. You can hear that in the vocal delivery, which rarely smooths over its edges, and in the instrumentation, which constantly threatens to tip over into collapse without ever fully losing control.

Musically, “Blank Page” pulls from the shared language of grunge, punk urgency and melodic alternative rock, but it avoids settling into any one of those categories for long. Instead, it moves like a live document—messy in places, but intentionally so, as if clarity would weaken its impact. The chorus doesn’t arrive as relief so much as release, a collective shout rather than a structured resolution.

There’s also a clear sense of chemistry underpinning the track. The interplay between guitars, bass and drums doesn’t feel layered in isolation, but locked together in real time, reacting to one another rather than simply supporting a fixed structure. That cohesion gives the song its forward drive, even when its emotional centre is anything but stable.

As part of the band’s forthcoming EP 4 Songs, “Blank Page” is less interested in framing pain as narrative and more focused on what it feels like to move through it in real time. It doesn’t offer resolution, and it doesn’t attempt to. Instead, it captures the moment someone decides not to stop, even when stopping feels easier.

Loud, unvarnished, and uncomfortably honest in places, “Blank Page” works because it never tries to clean itself up. It simply keeps going.
