Following the release of her new single “Ages”, Stockton-based artist Tariro sat down with Music Crowns to talk about the track, her first ever music video and what’s next.
Featuring fellow Teessider Dennis, “Ages” blends warm Afrobeats influences with a bright pop sensibility, capturing the messy in-between of a relationship ending – that point where things have changed, but the feelings haven’t quite caught up yet.
With both artists continuing to build momentum across the North East, we caught up with Tariro to find out more about bringing the track to life visually, developing as an artist in Teesside and what listeners can expect next.
We hear there’s a video on the way, which will be your debut music video. What was the experience of shooting it like?
Yes there is! It was my first time on a proffesional set, like lights, set, smoke machines, there was also a tennis ball on top the main camera, i still know know what for but seemed very legit haha. We went into filming just like ‘lets have some fun’ and i think that really translated on camera.
How did you approach translating the energy and narrative of the song into the visuals?
I think the video shows the energy of the song effortlessly with glimpses of emotion but also us performing in parts of it, the narrative is quite open for the audience to build and there are some lovely ‘flash back’ scenes in there which were a great touch from crewgal creative house who produced it!
Have you been working on any more music together? What can listeners expect from you next?
We’re always in the studio messing about so we probably have a few collabs in bank somewhere but nothing officially set to release were both working on EPs at the moment, so thats the next exciting thing for us both.
You’re both from Teesside, which isn’t immediately associated with this kind of sound. What has it been like developing as artists in the North East?
I feel like right now its the place to be there a buzz for music, i’ve been doing music for less than the year and the support from Nrthrn Baby, BBC introducing, Generator, Crewgal and other local artists isn’t something i think can be replicated anywhere else. I like that word developing because thats whats going on in the north east i feel like artists really have the support to help them grow.
Do you feel that coming from Stockton has shaped your music or the way you approach your careers/releases?
Definitely we have that teesside grit about us, don’t take ourselves too seriously but hard workers little underdogs of the uk scene.
No pressure, but what is the one thing each of you would most like to accomplish before the end of this year?
I have a single and an EP to follow so i’ve very excited to keep introducing myself as an artist and build from all the buzz so far. It’ll be my first time releasing a body of art so accomplishing that will feel mega.
