Headlines arrive before breakfast, opinions flood our feeds before we have formed our own, and a harmless scroll can somehow leave us knowing far more about complete strangers than we ever intended. On his new single “A Little Too Much,” Trevor Finlay takes that universal exhaustion and does something refreshingly unexpected with it—he makes it fun.
Witty, infectious and sharply observant, “A Little Too Much” is the kind of song that earns a laugh before its message fully sinks in. Finlay never turns the track into a lecture about technology or social media. Instead, he holds up a mirror to the way we live now, capturing the ridiculousness of our collective information addiction with enough humor to make listeners recognize themselves in it.
Lines like “I can see the writing on the virtual wall” and “Feeding on the feeds like a pig at the trough” are clever without trying too hard. That relatability is one of Finlay’s greatest strengths here. “A Little Too Much” could easily have become cynical, but it never does. There is a playful self-awareness running through the track, as though Finlay knows he is just as guilty as the rest of us. Rather than pointing fingers, he invites everyone into the joke.
Musically, the track is just as engaging. Finlay brings an element of his live performance into the studio by incorporating his loop pedal into a recording for the first time. The loop establishes a rhythmic pulse that gives drummer Sam Harrisson plenty of room to drive the song forward, creating a groove that feels immediate, organic and difficult to sit still through. Paired with an instantly memorable chorus, the result is a track with something increasingly rare: a message worth thinking about and enough energy to make you want to play it again.
But beneath the humor is another layer that gives “A Little Too Much” considerably more weight.
The song was written with Finlay’s longtime friend and collaborator, the late Robert K. Wolf, and stands among the final songs the pair wrote together. Knowing that history changes the way the track lands. What initially feels like a clever snapshot of contemporary life also becomes a celebration of a creative friendship and a songwriter whose work continues to live through the music they made together.
There is something particularly fitting about that legacy existing inside a song about an increasingly disposable world. Information appears and disappears by the second, but a great song—and the relationship behind its creation—can remain.
That contrast gives “A Little Too Much” its unexpected heart.
Finlay has managed to take a subject that could easily feel heavy and package it inside something warm, clever and genuinely enjoyable. The song acknowledges the absurdity of trying to process an endless stream of information without pretending to have the solution. Sometimes you don’t need another person telling you to put down your phone. Sometimes you just need someone to admit that the whole thing has gotten slightly ridiculous.
“A Little Too Much” succeeds because Trevor Finlay understands exactly where the line between commentary and entertainment should sit. It’s smart without preaching, funny without becoming novelty, and meaningful without sacrificing the groove. In a world constantly competing for our attention, Finlay has created something worth stopping to listen to.
