Alan Mair enters a new era with ‘FIELD OF ONE’

After decades of performing, writing and recording music, Alan Mair is proving that some of the most compelling chapters of an artist’s career can come much later. The musician, known for his work with The Only Ones, has returned with FIELD OF ONE, a new album that places personal experience firmly at the centre of its sound.

Released on 3rd August 2026, FIELD OF ONE introduces a more introspective side of Mair. Rather than looking back solely at his musical legacy, the album turns its attention towards the emotions and experiences that continue to shape us.

The album’s lead track, “How Could I Let This Happen,” captures that idea immediately. Built around a powerful alternative rock rhythm and a cinematic atmosphere, the song examines the aftermath of a moment when everything changes.

It is a question without an easy answer. A relationship can end. A decision can have unexpected consequences. An opportunity can disappear. Sometimes, one moment is enough to send life in an entirely different direction.

Mair transforms that universal experience into an atmospheric piece of rock that leaves room for listeners to interpret the story through their own lives.

A One-Man Creative Force

One of the most striking aspects of FIELD OF ONE is the level of creative control Mair has taken over the project.

He wrote, sang and produced the material himself, while playing almost every instrument. On “How Could I Let This Happen,” the lead guitar comes from Zal Cleminson, with Paul Rabigar contributing keyboards.

The result is a record that feels personal not only in its subject matter but also in its construction. Every element contributes to the atmosphere Mair is creating.

That musicianship comes from a career that has included thousands of live performances and appearances at major festivals such as Glastonbury and Wireless Festival. His work with The Only Ones also helped establish a musical legacy that would influence later artists including Nirvana, The Libertines, Blur and The Replacements.

With FIELD OF ONE, however, Alan Mair is not simply revisiting that history. He is using everything he has learned along the way to create something new.

The album is ultimately about being human: the decisions we make, the things we lose, the moments we cannot change and the questions we continue to ask ourselves.

For an artist with such a long history in rock music, FIELD OF ONE feels less like a look backwards and more like the beginning of another chapter.
