Remixes can easily become footnotes to an original record, but MALUM’s sunset ep makes a convincing case for hearing these tracks in a different light. At its centre is Prins Thomas’ reworking of mr. sunset, which takes the melodic and cinematic character of the original and stretches it into a more expansive, club-oriented journey.
Rather than radically dismantling the track, Thomas gradually opens it up. The groove becomes more hypnotic, melodies are given room to breathe, and the whole thing takes on the feeling of an extended journey rather than a conventional remix. There’s warmth and movement here, but also patience, in a track that feels equally suited to the dancefloor and the hours around it.
That approach fits naturally with MALUM’s own balance between electronic songwriting and club culture. Thomas doesn’t overwrite mr. sunset so much as uncover another side of it, turning the original’s sense of atmosphere into something more spacious and immersive.
The inclusion of release and rewild gives the EP some useful perspective, too, bringing the listener back to MALUM’s original world after the remix’s extended detour.
Ultimately, sunset ep works because it feels less like a prestigious remix assignment and more like a genuine conversation between artists. Prins Thomas finds something already present in MALUM’s music and simply gives it more room to roam. The result is a warm, melodic and quietly hypnotic first step into MALUM’s remix universe.
