On “Every Other Weekend,” indie rock singer-songwriter Mountain Climer delivers one of his most affecting and mature releases to date. The new single, out December 5, finds Colorado-based artist Jeremy Climer at his most vulnerable, tracing the delicate seams of love, loss, and the fight to keep a family whole.
Originally written in 2010, the track feels like it has been weathered by time in the best possible way. You can hear the lived-in truth of it, the years of reflection, the emotional distance that sharpens rather than dulls the story. Inspired by a close friend’s near-divorce and grounded in Climer’s own childhood experience as a kid of separated parents, the song hits with the sincerity of someone who understands what is at stake when a relationship teeters.
“This song hung around for a reason,” Climer says, and that reason is palpable. The lyrics navigate the complacency that can creep into long-term love and the wake-up call that comes when something precious is almost lost. It is a portrait of a family on the edge, rendered with empathy and clarity.
Produced and engineered by the legendary Paul Mahern (John Mellencamp, Iggy Pop, Lily & Madeleine), “Every Other Weekend” shines with Mountain Climer’s signature mix of indie rock grit and power pop warmth. Mahern’s meticulous vocal guidance becomes central to the song’s emotional punch, letting Climer’s delivery sit raw and real at the forefront.
The musicianship throughout is tightly woven and deeply felt. Devon Ashley’s drums give the track its heartbeat; Shannon Hayden’s guitar work adds shimmering texture; and Heidi Gluck’s contributions, including bass, piano, and her soaring harmonies, elevate the arrangement into something unforgettable. Her response vocals, recorded remotely, feel seamlessly intertwined. As Climer puts it, “It is a crime Heidi isn’t a household name,” and on this track, she proves why.
“Every Other Weekend” is more than a song. It is a reminder of what is worth fighting for. It marks another artistic leap forward for Mountain Climer as he builds toward his forthcoming full-length album Before You Turn Out the Lights (May 2025), promising even more depth and sonic ambition.
A stirring, beautifully crafted release that lingers long after the final note, “Every Other Weekend” stands among Climer’s strongest work yet.
