The Gift is the neatly packed rock-and-roll anthem from five-piece outfit ALLEY, hot off the heels of Fantasize Romanticize, released earlier this year. With traditional recording techniques and timeless writing, thrashing guitars meet an emphatic vocal display, with plenty of harmonies in the bright, washing choruses. Undoubtedly rock, with inflections of blues whilst toying with psychedelia, The Gift is a triumphant track.
Discussing the song’s journey, Ali recounts:
“The Gift started its long life cycle as the first set of lyrics that I ever wrote. Robbie already had the riff, and we put the two together to create the basis of a song which, as with many first collaborations, was shelved as we worked on ‘lower-hanging fruit’. We knew it was a song worth pursuing and came back to it nearly a year later, with a fresh perspective and no overthinking. Lyrically, it’s about seeing through someone who presents themselves as something they’re not: the ego, the pretension, the empty promises, and the increasingly obvious cracks in the façade. Rather than taking a bitter approach, we wanted the song to have a sense of humor and enjoy the absurdity of it all. It’s ultimately a song about calling out the fake, finding the funny side of chaos, and taking back control but with a grin, a raised eyebrow, and just enough venom. The recording process proved to be the most challenging of all our songs to date, with multiple layers and complexities; it’s a track which has never let us off the hook! The outcome has been worth all the blood, sweat, and tears; this is an extraordinary song, full of surprises, tension, and a driving groove which will make you wonder why you haven’t heard it before.”
