The latest release from Los Angeles raised artist Beverly Hell is almost two songs for the price of one. The first part details the feelings that come with rejection in a relationship, and the second is about now actually being better off. ‘Drug Opera’ is a back and forth between love and hate.
This track is the first single to be released from Hell’s debut E.P. titled Alice In Underland. She has been busy releasing stand alone songs in the past year, most of them are in trippy, electro style. ‘Drug Opera’ begins with gentle keys and there is a great use of revurb throughout. The electric drums make the track flow along nicely.
Lyrically, ‘Drug Opera’ swings from feelings of regret to feelings of loathing. It starts off quite placid; ‘I don’t wanna be your training wheels / Cos you know exactly know how I feel / I just wanna be there for ya / Show you I adore ya / But that wasn’t part of the deal’. These are definitive emotions, as often when a relationship turns sour, there’s still so much that needs to be said. Hell possesses an experimental electro style very similar to her contemporaries such as Billie Eilish.
On the thought process behind ‘Drug Opera’, Hell describes; ‘I’ve seen a lot of relationships where one person can’t see the other one clearly, and it ends up destroying the connection. Early on they are this perfect angel who can do no wrong, and then inevitably, when they turn out to be human and flawed, they become the villain. I wanted to explore that through the lens that fantasy is a drug that comes with withdrawals’. The chorus details the confusion that can be felt in a relationship; ‘I gotta get it right / I got no feeling like / I don’t know that I’m fine’. What is impressive is that Hell navigates the different emotions on this track with authenticity and a passionate vocal.
Two minutes into this heart-wrenching track comes the frenetic tempo change. This is in tune with the lyrics becoming more darker; ‘You got a gun / You’re having you’re fun / You’re playing the fool’. It’s feelings of hysteria from here on in. You can never tell if the character in this song wants the relationship to work or they’re saying they’re better off without them. Hell ends the track by flipping it again, by introducing sexual desires.
‘Drug Opera’ is an accurate depiction of the struggles we all encounter during a relationship. We all have cravings to be loved and this can feel like addiction. So it is like a drug. Hell is an exciting artist who isn’t afraid to push the envelope with her music.
