There’s no shortage of songs about heartbreak, regret and getting your life together. What makes Chloe Star’s new single ‘My Apology’ interesting is that the person at the other end of the apology isn’t an ex, a friend or anyone else at all. It’s herself.
Released on 25 September, the latest single from the Persian and Indigenous singer-songwriter is a quietly assured slice of alternative pop that finds plenty of emotional weight without feeling the need to shout about it. Star keeps things deliberately understated, letting a pensive Rhodes piano and a loose, R&B-leaning rhythm establish the mood before gradually turning up the heat.
Her vocal performance is similarly restrained. There’s an intimacy to the delivery that suits the subject matter, particularly when the song circles around the frustration of making mistakes and feeling as though you’ve taken a step backwards. Rather than dressing those emotions up in melodrama, Star sits with them.
That makes the chorus hit harder when it arrives. The bassline brings a little more warmth and movement, pushing the track forward without sacrificing its reflective character. Then comes the guitar solo, a welcome burst of colour that gives ‘My Apology’ a satisfying final release.
The real strength here is the song’s simplicity. Star’s message, that screwing up doesn’t erase the progress you’ve already made, is hardly a revolutionary concept, but it’s delivered with enough sincerity to feel lived-in rather than motivational-poster territory. Her own description of the track as “an apology I wrote to myself” neatly captures what works about it.
There are traces of the artists she cites as influences, from Amy Winehouse and Nirvana to Paramore and Billie Eilish, but ‘My Apology’ doesn’t come across as an exercise in imitation. Instead, Star is finding a space somewhere between alternative pop, R&B and darker contemporary songwriting.
It’s also a timely introduction to an artist about to step onto some considerably bigger stages. This October, Chloe Star joins NOAHFINNCE for eight UK dates, including London’s Electric Ballroom and Manchester Academy 2.
