Clarity Liao’s ‘Lose’ turns romantic insecurity into an unexpectedly vibrant piece of pop. Bright guitars, buoyant drums and an energetic arrangement contrast with lyrics centred on jealousy, comparison and the uncertainty of unrequited feelings, giving the track a compelling emotional tension.
Originally conceived as a stripped-back piano ballad, ‘Lose’ evolved into something more dynamic in the studio, with the production allowing Clarity to approach difficult emotions with a sense of playfulness rather than pure melancholy. Her candid songwriting captures the obsessive nature of wanting someone who may never reciprocate, before gradually arriving at the acceptance that some relationships are better released than pursued.
Drawing from indie pop, R&B, bedroom pop and contemporary singer-songwriter influences, Clarity continues to establish a sound that is fluid rather than genre-bound. Her experience as principal songwriter for Navillera, alongside award-winning compositions, provides a strong foundation for her solo development, but ‘Lose’ marks a clear step into her own artistic identity.
As a preview of her forthcoming debut EP Dear…,, the track presents Clarity as an assured songwriter with a natural instinct for pairing emotional honesty with accessible, thoughtfully produced pop. ‘Lose’ may deal with jealousy and rejection, but its ultimate strength lies in the sense of perspective it finds within them.
