Gina Malcolm releases new single ‘Traps’

Taken from the album The First RodeoTraps is the newest single from New Zealand-hailing singer-songwriter Gina Malcolm. The single itself is brooding and intense, part of a long-running collaboration with Arrowtown’s alt-country artist Tom Maxwell, musician Matt Joe Gow, and Adam Hattaway, built remotely over FaceTime and demo exchanges, and is a strong example of modern-day writing whilst maintaining an old-school feel.

“I wanted it to be a bit punk, a bit staunch” says Ginas. “A song about the demands of modern life, pressures on women to uphold crazy beauty standards, to confront the fake advertising world and corporate greed and generally question values in life… new cars, superficial stuff. And to include a warning to “ Mind Out for the Traps” .. which can trip us up.”

Gina Malcolm’s career began differently, starting on TV and radio as a journalist, presenting TV3’s Nightline. In 2021, she fulfilled her dream of entering the music industry, with support from Americana UK and Country Music News.
