Explosive funk outfit Happy Daggers crank up the chemistry on their latest single ‘Waiting’, an upbeat, sultry collision of nu-funk, electric soul and disco capturing the tantalising anticipation of getting together with someone you can’t resist.

Powered by an infectious groove, punchy vocals and a synth line inspired by the likes of Prince and D-Train, ‘Waiting’ bottles the sweat, swagger and playful sexuality at the heart of Happy Daggers’ sound. It’s a track built for movement, transforming romantic anticipation into a full-bodied funk workout.

“‘Waiting’ is about a funky, seductive connection we all hope to have with someone!” the band explain.

That sense of connection extends to the way Happy Daggers create their music. Rather than arriving with fully formed songs, the band write collectively in the rehearsal room, bringing individual ideas together and allowing tracks to evolve naturally through playing as a unit.

‘Waiting’ emerged from an energetic outro originally attached to an earlier track. Recognising its potential, the band pulled the section apart and rebuilt it as something entirely new, adding its Prince and D-Train-inspired synth line alongside a more forceful vocal attack. What began as a fragment soon developed into one of their most immediate and flirtatious releases.

The single is the third track to emerge from Happy Daggers’ 2025 recording series and offers another glimpse of the band’s forthcoming 2027 album. With its combination of vintage funk influences and a contemporary nu-funk punch, ‘Waiting’ captures a band drawing on the hedonistic spirit of funk, soul and disco without simply recreating the past.

That energy has long been most apparent on stage. A horn-powered frenzy of funk, electric soul and disco abandon, Happy Daggers have built their reputation around a live show driven by relentless grooves and contagious energy. Their performances have seen them appear alongside legendary and acclaimed names including Stevie Wonder, Pharrell Williams, Sister Sledge, Grandmaster Flash, The Sugarhill Gang and Tom Misch.

Whether in the rehearsal room, on record or in front of a crowd, Happy Daggers thrive on the chemistry created when musicians lock into the same groove. On ‘Waiting’, they turn that chemistry towards another kind of connection altogether.

Sexy, playful and impossible to sit still to, ‘Waiting’ finds Happy Daggers making the anticipation every bit as exciting as what comes next.
