Everyone has met someone who seems to have life suspiciously well organised. Holly Wild takes that particular kind of irritation and runs with it on ‘So Annoying’, turning envy, pettiness and the occasional irrational thought into a punchy slice of indie pop-rock.
The Australian artist has been releasing music since 2021, with collaborations spanning producers including David Arkwright and Jolyon Petch. Ahead of debut album ‘Technicolour’, ‘So Annoying’ shows a more mischievous side of her writing.
Distorted guitars and heavy drums give the track a garage-rock bite, while Wild shifts between lo-fi spoken delivery and rougher, more animated vocals. The production mirrors the song’s increasingly unfiltered train of thought, moving from mild irritation towards something far more gleefully dramatic.
The joke works because Wild knows exactly how petty the whole thing is. ‘So Annoying’ is not really an attack on the impossibly put-together friend at its centre. It is more interested in the ridiculous internal monologue that appears when somebody else’s life seems to be going just a little too well.
“My co-writer and I got a bit ridiculous imagining every petty thought you could have about her, and somewhere in all that laughing, the song showed up. I like to think of it as the anthem for ‘friend-vy’… the jealousy nobody likes admitting to.”
The accompanying video keeps that self-awareness intact. Wild and her friend move through street-art-filled surroundings and everyday shopping scenes, while exaggerated looks to camera turn the song’s private thoughts into a running confession.
There is something refreshing about a pop song willing to admit to an emotion this childish without trying to turn it into a lesson. ‘So Annoying’ is bratty, funny and deliberately over-the-top, and Holly Wild sounds like she is having far too much fun saying the things most people would rather keep to themselves.
