I’MMORTAL thrives in the space where electronic music becomes something stranger. On SWAMP MONSTER, the New York- and London-based artist builds a dark, unruly world from gnarly bass, hard-edged rhythms and warped synth textures, creating a track that feels equally at home in a club or some surreal, neon-lit nightmare. Released ahead of Halloween, its eerie atmosphere feels fitting without ever becoming predictable.
The production is deliberately physical, with the bassline driving the track forward as sharp electronic details and pounding percussion collide around it. I’MMORTAL’s whispering vocals bring an unsettling softness to the chaos, creating a contrast that gives the track much of its character. There is a playful experimentalism running through the arrangement too, reflecting an artist who draws as much from pop and theatricality as she does from darker corners of contemporary electronic music.
SWAMP MONSTER ultimately feels like another step towards the fully realised world I’MMORTAL is building around her music. Her background in classical performance, visual art and electronic production comes together in a sound that refuses to stay in one place, balancing menace, camp and genuine sonic experimentation. With echoes of the more boundary-pushing work of SOPHIE, Arca and umru, it is a striking addition to an increasingly distinctive catalogue.
