There is a particular frustration that comes with a relationship ending before it ever really begins. Kat Greta taps straight into that feeling on ‘I Know What This Is’, turning mixed signals, unanswered questions and eventual acceptance into bright, restless indie pop.
The Australian artist released her debut EP ‘Rhythm and Reverie’ last year, while recent single ‘Audacity’ reached number one on the AMRAP Indie/Alternative chart. On ‘I Know What This Is’, she pushes further into the contrast between upbeat production and lyrics that are considerably less certain.
Co-written and produced by Seetali Mack and mixed by Matt Voigt, the track moves on driving drums, electric guitar and clean pop textures, with Greta’s vocal rising above an arrangement that rarely sits still. It sounds outwardly optimistic, even as the story underneath slowly comes to terms with rejection.
The repeated title becomes less a question than a conclusion. ‘I Know What This Is’ captures that moment when ambiguity has gone on long enough and silence starts to provide its own answer.
“’I Know What This Is’ is about an ‘almost’, and the moment you realise that sometimes silence is the answer. It explores uncertainty, anticipation and the feeling of knowing what something is without ever having it fully defined.”
The accompanying video, filmed by Francis Biay, carries that same tension into a rain-soaked city at night. Greta follows someone who remains just out of reach, with the pursuit gradually giving way to the realisation that there may be nothing left to chase.
That combination of frustration and forward motion suits ‘I Know What This Is’. Greta doesn’t turn rejection into melodrama. Instead, she lets the disappointment sit beside a genuinely buoyant pop song, finding something satisfying in finally recognising an almost-relationship for exactly what it was.
‘I Know What This Is’ is out now.
