Kwasi lets the guard down on ‘Room Full of Broken Hearts’

Kwasi shifts into more melodic territory on ‘Room Full of Broken Hearts’, a new single featuring Nathan Wong and the latest preview of his forthcoming debut album ‘Outstanding MISFIT’.

The Australian artist has built his sound around a collision of hip-hop, punk and trap, with previous collaborations and performances alongside Genesis Owusu, Illy and 360. On ‘Room Full of Broken Hearts’, that intensity remains, but the production gives more space to guitar, live drums and melodic vocals.

Nathan Wong’s emo-influenced chorus provides the track’s clearest hook, while Kwasi moves between melodic autotuned phrasing and the rougher vocal delivery that has become central to his sound. The contrast works well, particularly as the song deals with the uncertainty of wanting connection while still questioning whether to commit to it.

That tension also feeds into the wider concept behind ‘Outstanding MISFIT’, a fourteen-track album exploring identity, alienation and Kwasi’s relationship with the MISFIT alter ego that appears throughout the project.

“I’ve spent a lot of my life feeling like I existed somewhere between different worlds, and for a long time I thought I needed to figure out which one I belonged in. This album came from realising that maybe I don’t have to choose.”

Rather than treating ‘Room Full of Broken Hearts’ as a straightforward relationship song, Kwasi links romantic uncertainty with the wider questions of identity running through the album. It gives the single a clear role within the record while still standing on its own as one of his more accessible releases.

‘Room Full of Broken Hearts’ is out now, ahead of ‘Outstanding MISFIT’ on October 16.
