Redtenbacher’s Funkestra celebrates 30 years of groove with masterful new album ‘Funkopia’

With Funkopia, Redtenbacher’s Funkestra celebrates not just a new album, but a remarkable 30-year legacy of groove, craftsmanship, and uncompromising creative independence. Led by London-based Austrian bassist, composer, and arranger Stefan Redtenbacher, the long-running collective marks this milestone with a 10-track record that captures the essence of what has kept them at the forefront of the UK’s instrumental scene for three decades: precision, personality, and a deep love of collaboration.

The album’s lead single, “Code 12,” sets the tone with a smoky, slow-burning funk groove recorded live for the Masterlink Sessions. Featuring guitar titans Tony Rémy and Mike Outram, the track thrives not on flashy theatrics but on interplay,  lines weaving, solos conversing, and a rhythmic pocket carved with effortless authority. It’s the sound of musicians who know one another’s instincts intimately, the product of years spent honing a shared musical language.

Throughout Funkopia, Redtenbacher gathers longtime collaborators from the UK, Austria, and the US, many of whom form the backbone of the Masterlink Sessions Collective. A central force in the album is Horn House, the elite London horn section whose members boast credits with icons such as Level 42, Diana Ross, Quincy Jones, The Eagles, and Chaka Khan. Their presence brings clarity, muscle, and character to the arrangements, a signature of Redtenbacher’s writing, grounding the album in relationships nurtured over countless sessions and years.

What stands out most on Funkopia is its refusal to fall into familiar funk tropes. Rather than imitating a classic era, it immerses listeners in the fully realised universe Redtenbacher has been shaping since the early ’90s, one where groove meets compositional depth, where ensemble playing takes precedence over individual flash, and where every line serves a larger architecture. The record is informed by the hundreds of recordings made at Masterlink Productions in Surrey, the twenty albums released through RSB Records, and an ever-growing catalogue that has surpassed 17 million Spotify streams.

For Redtenbacher, Funkopia is the embodiment of three decades of persistence, evolution, and belief in community-driven artistry. It’s a celebration of musicians who have grown together, supported one another, and continued creating in an industry that often prioritises the fleeting over the foundational.

Funkopia is a testament: to longevity, to craft, to groove, and to the enduring power of a band that has never stopped refining its voice. It’s the sound of thirty years spent in pursuit of something meaningful, delivered with warmth, precision, and unmistakable soul.
