Brighton four-piece The Stanford Family Band have unveiled their latest timeless charmer, ‘When Lonesome’, with it, announcing their upcoming EP Go Again.
Gracious and wistful, there’s something familiar and loving about their 60s and 70s influences set within smart modern production. Across four and a half minutes, audiences are treated to a wash of bright vocalisations and harmony, bouncy, clean guitar tones and a lilting rhythm section. It’s effortless and breezy, a loving pastiche for sounds gone by.
Laurence, band member, explains, “I think at the time I was listening to a lot of Tommy James and the Shondells, also a lot of Carpenters, and I thought the piano break in the verses was a pretty Carpenters thing to do. I then realised that the start sounded like ‘You’re My Best Friend’ by Queen, which made me laugh. A boy could only dream of those pipes.”
Previously appearing at festivals Bristol Sounds, Wanderlust, Deadfest and supporting Love and Bananagun on tour, The Stanford Family Band are back in a new era with the same vintage character but an expanded idea of where that could take them. Their affection for classic songwriting is self-evident, but they are nonetheless providing something unique and alive with these new and upcoming releases.
