After decades of writing songs, publishing acclaimed novels and sharing stages with some of Americana’s most respected names, Thom Bishop is entering a new creative era. His latest album, Train Leaving Dallas, marks not only the next chapter in a remarkable career but also reflects the unexpected inspiration he has found through Ireland’s vibrant music scene.
Released on 31 July 2026, Train Leaving Dallas features twelve tracks, combining six original compositions with six reimagined classics. Rather than simply alternating between new material and cover versions, Bishop and longtime collaborator Billy Panda approached the project with a clear artistic vision: allowing the original songs to feel timeless while giving familiar favourites a fresh perspective.
Leading the album is “Here Comes the Night,” Bishop’s heartfelt interpretation of the Van Morrison classic. The idea came to him while sitting in Galway one evening, guitar in hand, reflecting on the music that had first inspired him as a young songwriter. That moment became the catalyst for a recording that perfectly captures the album’s blend of nostalgia and renewal.
Although originally from the United States and based in Colorado, Bishop has developed a deep connection with Ireland through regular visits with his family. Spending time immersed in the country’s live music culture, from street performers to traditional pub sessions, has reignited his passion for songwriting and influenced the direction of his latest work.
Bishop’s career spans far beyond this latest release. Over the years he has performed alongside legendary artists including John Prine, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker and Pete Seeger, while also building a successful literary career under the pen name Junior Burke. His songwriting has earned praise from Billboard, The New York Times and respected music writer Paul Zollo, recognising the timeless quality of his work.
Life has also presented its share of challenges. A devastating flood destroyed Bishop’s home in 2013, while a later near-fatal accident encouraged him to embrace a renewed focus on creativity, spirituality and purpose. Those experiences continue to shape his songwriting today, giving Train Leaving Dallas an emotional honesty that runs throughout the record.
With Train Leaving Dallas, Thom Bishop proves that meaningful songwriting has no expiration date. Blending decades of experience with fresh inspiration drawn from Ireland’s musical traditions, the album celebrates storytelling, craftsmanship and the enduring power of songs that connect across generations.
