V1V1D isn’t overthinking things on ‘Tongue Rings & Tattoos’. After establishing himself through the atmospheric introspection of breakout releases ‘Timeless’ and ‘Stuffin’, the rising hip-hop artist switches gears with a track driven by a much simpler objective: turn the energy up and have some fun.

It’s a change of pace that suits him. While V1V1D’s growing catalogue has often occupied the meeting point between contemporary trap, atmospheric production and inward-looking songwriting, ‘Tongue Rings & Tattoos’ pushes immediacy to the foreground. The result is lighter on contemplation but certainly not on personality.

From the outset, the production is designed to hit quickly. An infectious hip-hop backdrop gives V1V1D plenty of room to attack the track with confidence, his delivery carrying the kind of effortless swagger that makes the record feel spontaneous rather than meticulously constructed. There is an appealing looseness to everything, as though capturing the moment mattered more than polishing away its rough edges.

V1V1D himself offers perhaps the most concise review possible: “This shit slaps.”

He’s not wrong.

Trying to extract an elaborate conceptual statement from ‘Tongue Rings & Tattoos’ would almost miss its purpose. Some records benefit from being unpacked; others work precisely because they don’t demand it. This one belongs firmly in the second category.

The track’s carefree attitude also provides an interesting counterpoint to V1V1D’s previous material. His music has frequently drawn upon identity, personal experience and the uncertainty of figuring things out in real time. Here, the process of figuring things out can wait. ‘Tongue Rings & Tattoos’ is more concerned with what happens when you stop analysing the moment and simply live inside it.

That doesn’t make it an artistic detour. Instead, it reveals another dimension to the sound V1V1D has been developing. The atmospheric qualities and trap foundations remain recognisable, but the emotional temperature has changed. Where previous songs invited listeners further into his head, this one feels designed to pull them into the room.

It’s an important distinction for an artist whose audience is expanding rapidly. Breakout single ‘Timeless’ has helped introduce V1V1D to an enormous online audience, with audio featuring the song generating more than 300 million views across TikTok and Instagram, while ‘Timeless’ and ‘Stuffin’ have collectively accumulated millions of streams.

The temptation after that kind of breakthrough is obvious: recreate exactly what worked and hope lightning strikes twice. ‘Tongue Rings & Tattoos’ is encouraging because V1V1D doesn’t appear particularly interested in doing that.

Instead, he retains the ingredients that made his earlier work distinctive while shifting their purpose. Atmosphere becomes adrenaline; introspection gives way to instinct; reflection is replaced by pure momentum. It demonstrates that his emerging identity doesn’t have to depend on one particular mood.

That versatility could prove valuable as his catalogue develops. V1V1D is clearly capable of making music that sits comfortably within the darker, more reflective spaces of modern rap, but ‘Tongue Rings & Tattoos’ suggests he can step outside them without losing his character.

There is also something refreshingly uncomplicated about a young artist allowing a song to exist simply because it feels good. In a landscape where every release can arrive burdened by narratives, strategies and explanations, V1V1D lets the record make its own argument.

And that argument is difficult to misunderstand.

‘Tongue Rings & Tattoos’ is V1V1D loosening up without losing his edge. Infectious, confident and deliberately immediate, it trades some of his usual introspection for pure hip-hop adrenaline and emerges as another convincing step forward. Millions of streams may have put V1V1D on the radar, but his willingness to keep showing different sides of himself could be what keeps people watching.
