Music Crowns is proud to premiere Canadian singer-songwriter Heather Ferguson’s new single, “Broken Horned Kudu,” a deeply human and narrative-driven track that bridges jazz, world music, and cross-cultural collaboration. Based in Victoria, British Columbia, Ferguson draws on a lifetime shaped by literature, travel, and musical exchange, creating songs that resonate across cultures while maintaining a deeply personal lens.
Recorded in Cape Town with leading South African musicians and under the musical direction of renowned jazz pianist and arranger George Werner, “Broken Horned Kudu” blends Cape Jazz, world jazz, and contemporary vocal storytelling. Ferguson’s travels across East and Southern Africa inspired the song, using the metaphor of a kudu with a broken horn to reflect resilience in the face of tragedy and the fragility of life. The track features both English and Xhosa vocals, offering a layered narrative that emphasizes shared musical language and collaboration.
Post-production was completed in Victoria with Canadian producer Wynn Gogol, ensuring a seamless dialogue between the Canadian and South African artists. Musically, the single draws on Cape Jazz ensemble traditions, African rhythmic foundations, and spacious acoustic production, crafting a sound that feels both grounded and expansive. “Broken Horned Kudu” marks an important evolution in Ferguson’s artistry, combining her jazz-rooted songwriting with global collaboration while exploring themes of loss, power, and human endurance.
With “Broken Horned Kudu,” Heather Ferguson continues to solidify her reputation as a storyteller whose music transcends borders, blending narrative, culture, and emotion into a singular, unforgettable listening experience.
“Broken Horned Kudu is a rare and compelling cross-cultural collaboration that speaks directly to the power of jazz as a global language,” says music publicist Danielle Holian, Decent Music PR. “Heather Ferguson’s storytelling is both intimate and expansive, and the musical dialogue with South African artists brings depth, authenticity, and emotional resonance. This is a thoughtful, beautifully crafted recording that connects audiences across borders and traditions.
