MUSIC PREMIERE: Konrad Kinard unveils haunting new album ‘War Is Family’

Texas-born composer, performance artist, and multi-instrumentalist Konrad Kinard has released his latest album, War Is Family (Surviving the Cold War and the Unraveling of an Imagined America), through Incinerate Media and The Orchard. Known for his boundary-pushing work across avant-garde, Americana, and experimental soundscapes, Kinard presents a deeply personal exploration of memory, myth, and history. The album, described by Kinard as “a radio drama without the drama or the radio,” fuses spoken word, sound collage, and music into a haunting and immersive narrative.

Drawing on his childhood in Cold War-era Texas, Kinard reconstructs a psychological and cultural landscape shaped by the looming threat of nuclear annihilation. “I was born a Texan. I was born into the Cold War,” Kinard reflects. “Sputnik circled the earth and shattered the peace in my home. This album is a letter from that time — from a child raised under the eternal threat of annihilation — to the Now.” Across twenty tracks, from the ominous opening “Born A Texan” to the cathartic “A Texas Summer Night”, the album traces a generation’s unease while blending intimate storytelling with experimental sound design.

The album boasts an impressive roster of collaborators spanning continents and musical disciplines. Kinard performs vocals, piano, guitar, bass, programming, and carrugahorn, joined by BJ Cole on pedal steel, cellists Eleonora Rosca, Emily Burridge, and Matthias Hejlik, drummer Chris Farr, harmonium and bass by Fredrik Kinbom, contrabass by Fergus Quill, vocals and percussion by Taro and Lola Kinard, and even tap dancing by Junior Laniyan. This ensemble’s diverse instrumentation, coupled with production by Fredrik Kinbom at Madame Vega’s Boudoir in Berlin and additional engineering by Boris Wilsdorf (Einstürzende Neubauten) and Bryce Goggin (Anthony and the Johnsons), creates a richly textured soundscape that bridges performance art and musical composition.

Kinard’s work draws listeners into a space that is at once cinematic, intimate, and unsettling. Field recordings, spoken monologues, live instrumentation, and layered production merge to evoke a surreal, radio-theatre-like experience. The album’s thematic arc, from the paranoia-infused “Better Red Than Dead” to reflective pieces like “Sun Rises”, reflects both personal memory and collective cultural anxiety. Kinard’s ability to balance narrative, melody, and experimental techniques positions him as a singular voice capable of articulating complex historical and emotional landscapes through sound.

War Is Family is a bold, immersive statement from an artist continually redefining the boundaries of performance and composition. Konrad Kinard’s hybrid approach—part memoir, part sonic experiment, part performance art—offers a rare opportunity to traverse decades of cultural memory and personal reflection, all while inhabiting a meticulously crafted, otherworldly sound universe. With this release, Kinard not only honors the anxieties of a bygone era but also affirms his enduring relevance as a creator willing to explore the profound intersections of history, art, and music.
