With his newest single, Hilary Cousins delivers a stirring piano ballad filled with soaring musical textures and uplifting lyrics.
What at first feels like a deeply personal song, ‘The Well’ actually explores universal themes of loss, nostalgia, self-identity and the quest for inspiration.
The song’s narrator struggles to overcome the loss of an important person in their life.
They reflect upon and cherish the person’s influence and continue to seek their guidance, even as they carry on without them.
‘The Well’ begins with an uplifting piano arrangement that instantly blends with the smooth vocals of Hilary Cousins, as he creates this melancholic track.
Musically, the song is a departure from Cousins’ normal folk-rock arrangements which are propelled by drums and guitars.
The track was written and produced by Cousins and co-produced by Mike Pappas (Crowded House, Mick Fleetwood, Rob Cavalo).
The single was mixed by Jim Scott (Tom Petty, Foo Fighters, Jason Mraz), mastered by Steve Fallone at Sterling Sound (Sam Fender, Tyler Childers, Counting Crows) and recorded at studios in Greenville, Michigan and Los Angeles, California.
Contributing musicians include Chris Ranney (Map of The World) on piano and synths; Dan Wistrom (Rich Robinson Band) on pedal steel; Linn Holmes (Eric Gales) on background vocals; Pappas on bass and acoustic guitar and Cousins on vocals.
