Three Songs Behind Dark Mode: by Lex Bucha

Dublin based singer songwriter Lex Bucha released his new EP Dark Mode, a five track collection led by Faithless (Sacrifice), produced by Liam Geddes. Following his debut EP Painless Mode, the new project moves into darker, more immediate territory. We asked Lex to pick three songs that helped shape it.

HURTS: ‘Evelyn’

This one fed the darker, electronic side of the EP. I’ve always loved music that feels beautiful but slightly dangerous, like something is lurking underneath that could blow at any point. That tension found its way into Paranoid and Faithless (Sacrifice).

Dons: ‘Hollow’

Liam Geddes wrote and produced Hollow, and hearing it was one of the reasons I wanted to work with him. Writing a ballad with him for Pill felt full circle. It reminded me that sometimes you don’t need all the noise and effects, just a good melody, a piano and a few emotional problems. Conveniently, I had plenty.

Martello: ‘The Healer’

The wildcard. Martello is a Dublin artist in my wider network, and I’d love to work with him. The Healer feels honest and human, like it isn’t trying too hard. I wanted that in Watch Me Fall and Pill: some darkness, but enough vulnerability to let people see the person underneath.

Dark Mode is out now, and Faithless (Sacrifice) is the place to start. Listen to the full EP here.
