Australian producer and DJ HARLEY GIRL comes out swinging with his latest single, ‘Friction’ — a slick, kinetic collision of UK garage, bass pressure, shimmering synths and a seriously addictive vocal hook.
Built around a delicious sense of tension, ‘Friction’ thrives on contrast. Glidey, slightly off-kilter synths weave between the beats while a gritty, rhythmic vocal locks everything into place. The result is hypnotic, propulsive and made for a big system.
The track started life back in January, but really clicked when HARLEY GIRL discovered a vocal sample from Kenyan group Team Pyscho on Tracklib. Originally around 20 BPM slower, the vocal had an energy that immediately caught his attention. Rather than smoothing out the contrast, he made it the centrepiece.
“I was really drawn to this vocal that felt quite on-grid, in contrast to the synths I’d played that felt like they slid in between the grid in a way.”
And you can hear exactly what he means. That push-and-pull between the locked-in vocal and slippery production gives ‘Friction’ its distinctive edge, creating a groove that constantly feels like it’s about to break loose.
It’s club music with character; polished without losing its grit, and effortlessly catchy without playing it safe.
