Southend singer-songwriter and LGBTQ+ artist Heidi Boualili is stepping into a defining new chapter with the announcement of her debut album What I Didn’t Know Then, set for release on May 27th, alongside her new single “City you took from me,” available now. The project arrives as a bold, emotionally charged statement of intent, framing Heidi not just as a rising voice in UK music, but as an artist shaped by lived experience, resilience, and an unflinching commitment to storytelling through song.
Born in London in 2002 to a British mother and Arabic father, and raised in a coastal Essex town, Heidi’s creative identity was forged early through contrast, between cultures, class realities, and the search for belonging. Drawn to the lyricism of hip-hop icons like Biggie Smalls and Lauryn Hill, she began writing rap verses as young as nine, using music as both escape and expression. For Heidi, songwriting quickly became more than a creative outlet; it became a lifeline during a turbulent adolescence marked by bullying and isolation.
That period of hardship would ultimately become a turning point. After experiencing severe bullying at school, Heidi found an unexpected source of support in a music teacher who recognised her talent and helped nurture her confidence. One of her earliest songs, written about her experiences, went viral at just 12 years old, gaining thousands of views overnight and confirming what had once felt impossible, that her voice carried weight beyond her own world. From there, music stopped being just survival and became direction.
Since then, Heidi has carved out a steadily rising independent career, stepping away from a traditional path in law and performing arts to fully commit to music. She has built a combined social following of over 35,000, headlined Chinnerys in her hometown, and achieved notable chart success, including an iTunes chart position that surpassed major global names and an R&B chart hit that reached the upper tiers of the genre listings. Her work has also received support from BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders, who praised her as having “the most powerful, breathtaking voice I’ve heard in a minute”, alongside Clara Amfo, as well as coverage from Sky News and a sync placement via Love Island UK.
At its core, What I Didn’t Know Then is a reflective, deeply personal body of work that traces Heidi’s evolution through pain, identity, and self-acceptance. Described by the artist as “a quiet conversation between who I was and who I’m becoming,” the album moves between vulnerability and strength, with tracks like “Un Poco Loco (All the Time)” and “City U Took From Me” exploring the space between struggle and hope. A stripped-back rendition of “Isn’t She Lovely” also features as a tribute to the women who have shaped her resilience. With this debut, Heidi Boualili positions herself not only as an emerging voice to watch, but as an artist already speaking with hard-won clarity and emotional depth.
