Nashville has always had its underground, and John Condit has long been one of its most dependable figures. A veteran of psych-rock outfit The Inscape and former lead guitarist in Lilly Hiatt’s touring band, Condit returns with a new project, John Condit & The Comedown, and a debut single that sounds like a man with something to prove.
“Shooting Star” was recorded live to analog 2-inch tape, minimal overdubs, no frills. The approach suits it perfectly. Built around the slow-burn atmospherics of The Verve and the rawer edges of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, it moves from something delicate and open into a full, fuzz-heavy sprawl that earns every second of the build.
Condit wrote it coming out of a writer’s block that followed his 2024 solo album Return to the Center. The intention behind it is simple: cut through the fog. As a piece of music, it does exactly that.
“Shooting Star” is out Today.
