Two years since his last foray into the rock sphere, Drew Davies marks a full-throated return with goth-rock heart-stopper ‘La Revanche’. Stadium guitars meet gritty vocals, powered by crashing drums, leaving plenty to be admired. The South Yorkshire-hailing non-conformist shows that the heart of rock and roll still beats, without the gloss of label-led conveyor-belt bands, but with all the grandeur of a gothic noir story, exploring themes of betrayal and vengeance.
In Drew’s words,
“With La Revanche I went deep down the rabbit hole of dark, pseudo-gothic rock. Probably fitting given the song’s themes are ones of emancipation and revenge. I found my love of 90’s alternative rock soundtracks coming out in the orchestration; there are a few nods to The Crow, 12 Monkeys and even Elfman’s Batman in there. The song signals a turning point for me too in my records – it’s the first single I’ve released with my full live band, it brought a new level of energy and freshness to the work.”
Off the back of sophomore record Holloway Nights and his self-titled debut, in 2024 and 2020 respectively, Drew’s brief hiatus shows no signs of lost ambition, more so a brooding of self-rediscovery. With fans in high places, including throughout the BBC on national and regional levels, ‘La Revanche’ is unapologetically dramatic, raw, and ultimate, worth the wait.
